The basics

What every moving company needs.

Before you look at state-specific requirements, here’s what virtually every moving company in America needs regardless of location.

STEP 01

Business registration

Register your business as an LLC or corporation with your state. This protects your personal assets and is required before getting any other licenses.

STEP 02

EIN from the IRS

Employer Identification Number — your business's tax ID. Free to get at irs.gov. Required for opening a business bank account and hiring employees.

STEP 03

USDOT number

Required for any moving company with vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR, or operating across state lines. Register at FMCSA.dot.gov.

STEP 04

Motor Carrier (MC) number

Required for interstate moves — moves that cross state lines. Apply through FMCSA. Required in addition to, not instead of, your USDOT number.

STEP 05

Commercial auto insurance

Minimum coverage requirements vary by state and vehicle type, but commercial auto insurance is mandatory for all moving vehicles. Personal auto policies don't cover commercial operations.

STEP 06

General liability insurance

Protects against property damage and bodily injury claims. Most customers and commercial clients require proof of GL coverage before booking.
